Vista successor rumored to be on track for 2009 release

Posted Jan 18th 2008 4:48PM by Donald Melanson
Filed under: Desktops, LaptopsRumors of Microsoft’s successor to Vista have been cropping up virtually since day one, and if this latest one is to be believed, it looks like one of the earliest may have been right on target after all. According to TG Daily, “several industry sources” are now saying that the a very early version of the so-called “Windows 7″ OS has already shipped to “key partners,” and that Microsoft is now eying the second half of 2009 for a release of the real deal. That’s a slight revision from the most recent rumors, which had pegged the debut as late as 2010 or, more vaguely, sometime within the next three years. As if that wasn’t enough, Microsoft’s apparently also lined up the next two early versions to be released, with the so-called M2 build slated for April or May of this year, and the M3 release slated to drop sometime in the third quarter. Given recent history, however, it’s probably not the best idea to start marking your calendars just yet.

Frog to Prince Kit is snazzy

The Magic Frog to Prince kit certainly brings back childhood memories of fairy tales, especially those involving (really) desperate damsels in distress who resorted to smooching a frog while trying to escape from their royally dreary existence.

The Magic Frog to Prince removes the need for the whole ‘kissing amorous hopping things’ behavior (which must count as some kind of species abuse anyway). You simply add water to this little green fella, and within minutes he’ll be transformed into a handsome prince. We use the word handsome in its broadest possible sense of course. Within 72 hours your prince will have grown to a mighty, if not very useful, 10cm in height. Diminutive and unable to whisk you off to his castle he may be, but he’s cheap, fun and people love him.

Get your very own prince today without even kissing a slimy amphibian! Too bad this prince is one cheap dude as you’ll need to pay £2.99 to even bring him out on a date. Good thing he doesn’t answer back though.

LED lighting that can be flattened

Check out these lighting fixtures that are extremely minimal in nature, and was specially designed to be shipped flat like a postcard. They are actually a laser-cut sheet of aluminum complete with an integrated LED illumination source that is powered by a single button battery, certainly not something you can find at any home improvement store nearby. Designed by Dutch designer Sander Mulder, the Eureka Lamp as it is known can be mailed in an envelope. Too bad this is but a prototype concept at time of publishing - it would certainly be nice to see it being fleshed out at a factory somewhere in this world.

JAKKS Pacific announces EyeClops BioniCam portable microscope

Posted Jan 18th 2008 2:37PM by Donald Melanson
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets If microscopes like those from Celestron are a bit more than you need, you may want to keep an eye out for JAKKS Pacific’s upcoming EyeClops BioniCam, which is obviously aimed at kids but, as we’ve seen in the past, will no doubt appeal to more adventuresome users out there as well. A follow-up to the company’s EyeClops Bionic Eye, this one ups the features considerably with the addition of an LCD screen, which you can use to peek at things at magnification levels of 100x, 200x or 400x. Also like that considerably higher-end Celestron, this one packs a built-in digital camera (no word on the resolution) and an included USB thumb drive to make transfers to a computer as easy as can be. No word on a price just yet, unfortunately, though you can look for it to hit stores sometime this fall.

GeForce 8800 GT upgrade causes headaches for some Mac Pro users

Posted Jan 18th 2008 11:59AM by Donald Melanson
Filed under: Desktops
It looks like Mac Pro users wanting to get in on some of the latest and greatest action without ditching their old system altogether are still out of luck, despite a recently released “upgrade kit” from Apple that got some of their hopes up, and caused some consternation for anyone that actually took the plunge on one. As a number of users have reported on various discussion forums (one of which is linked below), the $349 GeForce 8800 GT upgrade kit only works in the newest Mac Pros, and not the older models, due to their lack of support for PCI-Express 2.0. That little detail was indicated as requirement by Apple, although many apparently assumed the cards would work because of the inherent backwards compatibility in PCIe 2.0. As you might expect, many users are none to pleased with Apple actions on the matter, with some claiming that the company’s interested only in getting customers to buy a new system instead of prolonging the life of their old one. Shocking, we know.

1.1.2 iPhones now unlocked… 3 days too late

Posted Jan 18th 2008 8:12AM by Thomas Ricker
Filed under: CellphonesTeenager George Hotz, aka GeoHot, the original iPhone unlocker is back. In a post to his personal blog he states that he has successfully unlocked a 1.1.2 firmware and bootloader 4.6 iPhone. Better yet, he posts the not-for-dummies version of the instructions to downgrade the bootloader to version 3.9 in preparation for running AnySim. We haven’t tried this ourselves so remember, as GeoHot himself states, this hardware method “could brick your iPhone.” You haven’t upgraded to 1.1.3 already have you? If so, you’re stuck with AT&T.

Dell Latitude XT tablet unboxing

Posted Jan 18th 2008 10:07AM by Evan Blass
Filed under: Laptops, Tablet PCs Since some of you have apparently been waiting on Dell to make a tablet PC for well over three years now, we imagine that the first unboxing of the company’s Latitude XT convertible will be welcome eye-candy to the true believers. With dual input methods (finger or pen), integrated 802.11n, and optional SSD and WWAN, this model definitely delivers on a number of fronts, though the relatively low resolution and high price may be too much for some to bear. Check out another shot after the break, and then hit up the Read link for the full ritual over at I Started Something.

Line Golfer - create your own golf course and play it…awesome

Line Golfer. Aaargh, yet another superb idea for a game, so more hours lost. The idea is that you design your own golf course – Line Rider style – and then you play it. And good luck to you, dear reader. Brilliant stuff!

How to create a course: Use the tools at the top while in edit mode to design your course. When you are finished editing, use the disk icon and follow the onscreen instructions to publish your course to Candystand.com for other people to play and rate. You can also use the folder icon to save the course locally for future editing before publishing to Candystand.com… While taking a shot, move your mouse to adjust your shot angle. Hold the left mouse button to charge your shot, release the left mouse button to hit the ball

Free Lines make extension cables fun again

From what we can glean, Sung-hun Choi’s Free Lines are merely a concept at this point, but any DIY’er trying to run power from the garage (or your neighbor’s crib) to the home could appreciate the vision. Essentially, the design consists of a series of snappable cables and modular outlet blocks which can be strung along to just the right length, and better still, the artsy type could even use it to dress up a bare wall. Thinking there’s just too much promise in this for it to stay stuck at the drawing board? Yeah, us too.
