iPhone SDK key leaked?

Posted Jan 28th 2008 4:39PM by Nilay Patel
Filed under: Cellphones We’re not exactly sure how this all went down, but we trust Erica Sadun over at TUAW when she says that it appears that the iPhone’s SDK key — which will probably be required by all “official” third-party apps — has been leaked. Two different sites currently have the key posted, but it’s all just for show until next month, when the SDK hits for real.

CybertronPC CM900; The more expensive Eee PC

The latest company attempting to cash in on the ultra-mobile craze, CybertronPC is now offering what appears to be a very similar version of the 2G Eee PC, except with a higher price tag.

The CM900 features most of the same specs, but to be fair they do have a few very small changes. Notably it offers the Intel Celeron M Processor 353 (900MHz, 512KB L2 Cache, FSB 400MHz), Mobile Intel 910GML Express Chipset, 512MB DDR2-400 memory, 2GB solid-state disk and 7-inch WVGA (800×480) TFT LCD display. Sadly the CM900 really just offers you the option to pay $50 more, instead of the $299.99 that you would pay for the 2G Eee PC, this retails for $349.99.

Think of it as the more expensive cousin of the Eee PC.

Pocketable gas sensor aims to better understand asthma

Sure, we’ve got fairly sophisticated methods of curbing asthma attacks, but a new pocketable device could hold the key to unlocking more about the relationship between “asthma symptoms and the air a sufferer breathes.” Reportedly, this device could allow researchers to look back after an attack has occurred and see exactly what was happening environmentally beforehand. Gurus at the Georgia Tech Research Institute have already been able to help one individual out, as they discovered a “pollutant pathway” from the volunteer’s basement into the living room that was allowing vehicle exhaust and gasoline fumes to infiltrate the house. From here, the creators are hoping to downsize the device even further and make it more sensitive, but we’ve no idea if the current iteration will ever be used commercially.

NEC intros 17-, 19-, and 22-inch LCD monitors

All geared up to start your work week with a trio of hu hum NEC monitors? If so, we won’t delay any longer in doling out the nitty-gritty. Up first is the 17-inch LCD174WXM, which features a 1,440 x 900 resolution panel, DVI / VGA (x2) inputs, twin one-watt speakers, a headphone jack, 250 nits of brightness and an 800:1 contrast ratio. As for the 19-inch LCD194WXM and 22-inch LCD224WXM, they each share a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness and 176-degree viewing angles. Still, the 19-incher gets stuck with a 1,440 x 900 resolution while the 22-inch sibling gets blessed with 1,680 x 1,050. Per usual, there’s no word on prices just yet, but considering the lack of excitement these are bringing, we doubt too many folks will mind.

JVC unveils LH905 1080p LCD HDTVs, includes Genessa Premium engine

It wasn’t quite a year ago that we saw JVC gush all over its own LH805 series of LCD HDTVs, but now, those are simply livin’ in the past. Introduced today, the LH905 series steps things up a notch with the included Genessa Premium 36-bit video engine. Additionally, the 37-inch LT-37LH905, 42-inch LT-42LH905 and 47-inch LT-47LH905 will all feature a 1080p resolution, 500 nits of brightness, dual ten-watt speakers, 10-bit LCD IPS panel, a built-in analog / digital terrestrial tuner, DLNA support, three HDMI 1.3 ports, integrated SD slot and an Ethernet port for good measure. Unfortunately, these are all sporting the elusive open offer tag for now, but the trifecta should start floating onto shelves late next month for those interested.

mini polystation 3 mocks playstation 3

You’ve gotta hand it to those cheap Chinese knock-off manufacturers. At least they attempt to keep up with the latest gaming consoles when they crank out their crap. Case in point, this awful PS3 copy known as the PolyStation 3.

While it may look slightly like a real PlayStation 3, under the hood, this Mini PS3 is completely incapable of playing anything resembling real video games. Instead, you get a single crummy LCD game that displays on this PS3’s pop-out screen. Here’s a humorous hands-on review and look inside the “console” by British gadget reviewer Dr. Ashen.

Thankfully, this battery-powered device is much tinier than an actual PlayStation 3, so it’s doubtful that even the most gullible parent will mistake this awful clone for the real deal. Even if you wanted to buy one, they’re nearly impossible to find.

BlackBerry Pearl 8120

IT Reviews has a review of the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and writes, “While RIM is certainly hoping to open up new markets with the Pearl 8120, the 2-megapixel camera is likely to be a little underpowered for many consumers’ tastes, and the lack of hardware-based music playback controls will be a turn-off for those with access to more consumer-oriented media playing mobiles. The absence of 3G may also be an annoyance, though fast e-mail download and browsing is helped by the support for EDGE which we tried on O2’s network.”

Wii Fanboys have a new king. He is a researcher at Carnegie Mellon by the name of Johnny Chung Lee and what he has done is nothing short of inspiring. I have seen some pretty cool hardware hacks in my time, but nothing this much fun or this accessible. He asks on the video if Nintendo is watching, my bet is they will be. Nintendo, you had better give this guy a job, imagine what he could do for Sony.

Check out the article on Crave for another one of his projects, a Minority Report inspired multi-touch system made out of an Infrared LED array, reflective tape and a Wii Remote.

Nokia acquires Trolltech — the biggest little company you’ve never heard of

In a move meant to bolster its software development prowess, Nokia just announced the acquisition Trolltech. Who’s Trolltech? Well, its software can be found in some 10 million devices. In fact, Trolltech’s Qt is used by such familiar applications as Skype, Google Earth, and Photoshop Elements while their Qtopia was spotted on a hacked Archos 5 series earlier this month. By acquiring Trolltech’s software development frameworks and application platforms, Nokia hopes to help developers create Internet applications that work on PCs and across Nokia devices. Specifically, Nokia claims that the move will “further increase the competitiveness of S60 and Series 40.” The deal also grandfathers Nokia into the LiMo Foundation and its attempt to bring open-source to your handset. Hear that Android? The $153 million offer must still be processed through regulatory channels and approved by shareholders — all expected before June in out.
