SlingPlayer Mobile updated for all types except Palm

Looking to keep its promise of delivering newer versions of its SlingPlayer Mobile software, Sling Media has made updates available for download on their web site today. And not only did they update three currently existing versions of their software client, but they also added support for a few new devices, namely the Nokia N95 8GB, the Treo 500v, and the Samsung i760. Streaming has also been optimized on select handsets, and one such is the Sprint Mogul. Interestingly enough, though, the SlingPlayer Mobile software client on the Palm OS has not been upgraded yet like the other clients.

To download the latest version of SlingPlayer Mobile, all you have to do is log on to Sling Media’s web site and click on the appropriate links. You won’t be needing to fork out any money because the download for the upgrades are free, unless of course if you’re not already an existing customer, at which case you’d have to pay $30 per handset. And don’t forget you also need a Slingbox set up in your home (or any place you stay) for all this to work. So unless you do and you’re willing to pay for the hardware (and software, for new customers), don’t be dreaming up about this right now, thinking that things will magically appear out of nowhere. More info available at the following links.

Nokia 6600 Slide Mobile Phone

Along with the Nokia 6600 Fold, Nokia also unveiled its alternative, the Nokia 6600 slide, for those who prefer slider phones over clamshells.

Just like the Nokia 6600 Fold, the slider version also has the double-tap feature. Tapping the phone twice displays the time, shows alerts, and even rejects incoming calls. The Nokia 6600 slide is equipped with a 2.2-inch QVGA display as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera which takes high quality pictures that you can send through Internet connection of MMS. Devoid of 3G functionality, the Nokia 6600 slide goes for a slightly lower price of 200.

Manodo’s screen gives apartment dwellers the 411

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 9:44AM
Those looking for another good reason to set up camp in Sweden have just found it. Okay, so maybe Manodo’s oh-so-informative display isn’t that astonishing, but it certainly gives a select few apartment residents in the country access to an enviable amount of information. Reportedly, the screen is being installed in several Swedish cities as part of a larger pilot project, and aside from dishing out details about the next available train, who exactly is standing outside their building and how much energy folks are currently consuming, it also serves up data on how many pounds of CO2 you’re responsible for releasing while kicking back in your pad. Unfortunately, we’re not sure if said solution is available en masse (or if it ever will be).

Video: Dell’s XPS M1530 and M1330 now pink like flowers and pigs

by Thomas Ricker, posted Apr 29th 2008 at 3:46AM
Ugh, it’s springtime again. So in addition to the pools of human secretions warming into an olfactory howdy-do on city sidewalks, we get these, the pink laptops. The pink XPS M1530 and M1330 now official. Check the late-nite Dell Infomercial after the break; Ron Popeil Productions must be so proud.

Throw Alarm Clock

Have you ever been so mad to wake up in the morning that you smash your alarm clock? Hopefully you don’t do that every day, or that would be one expensive habit.

However, you could purchase the Throw Alarm Clock, a special type of alarm clock which actually requires you to bounce or throw it in order to switch it off.

As you can see, the Throw Alarm Clock is a cushioned ball with an LCD display. It also has all the features of an alarm clock such as a time, date, as well as an hourly chime and the aforementioned alarm.

This Throw Alarm Clock is available in several sport ball shapes such as Cricket, Golf, and Football (aka Soccer). It also comes with a circular stand that mounts the ball, so it will not roll off of the nightstand.

So if you are the type who really needs to let out your aggression on your alarm clock, then you owe it to yourself and your wallet to purchase the Throw Alarm Clock now on the Boy Stuff site for £9.95. That, or you can truly deal with your anger management issues and try and wake up with a cheery disposition.

White space networking could disrupt hospital telemetry systems

by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 28th 2008 at 9:48PM
The stumbling blocks keep piling up as white space networking struggles to get off the ground: it looks like the manufacturers of healthcare equipment are set to join NAB in opposing the technology. Wireless medical telemetry devices like heart monitors have been operating in broadcast white spaces since the late 80s, and manufacturers like GE Healthcare say that the Microsoft- and Google-backed white space networking initiative could potentially “directly interfere” and “prevent patient monitoring.” For its part, the FCC has set aside all of channel 37 for medical telemetry devices in 1998 after interference from a nearby TV station shut down the system at Baylor University Medical Center, but it wasn’t mandatory, and hospitals that haven’t made the switch could face millions of dollars in upgrade costs. That’s not say that medical telemetry concerns are a problem that can’t be solved — the new Google push includes a channel 37 exception, for example, and there are some other compromise solutions on the table — but it seems like there’s no end of issues for a technology that hasn’t really even been demonstrated working yet.

Alesis Multiport: Recording directly to your iPod

So, picture this. You and your friends have decided to reunite your old highschool punk band for a second coming. A second jab at the musical stardom that you and your buddies dreamed about in history class. Though this time around, you’ll be damned if you’re going to record on a 4-track cassette recorder.

The $200 Alesis Multiport brings the power of recording into the new technological age of portable media. No more clumsy cassettes or memory cards, the Multiport records directly to your 5th generation ipod, 2nd or 3rd generation iPod Nano, or even your PC via USB, sending your tunes directly to your DAW of choice.

The new Alesis Multiport features built-in level meters and on-board iPod controls, so navigating the portable media player is as easy as tapping a button on the main control panel. Twin industrial grade XLR balance inputs with phantom power are perfect for hooking up most pro mics, while 1/4″ stereo outputs and USB support finish off the external audio transfers.

You can even playback from the iPod as you’re recording, which is sure to work wonders on getting your timing down just right. It’s the features like these which really make all of the difference. The integration of new portable media technology with the older form of recordable media is really what the next step of technology is all about. Innovation and integration using the knowledge we already have to create something better.

Barbegrill merges dual functions

The Barbegrill will definitely confound the older generation, being a mini barbecue grill where one is able to control its heat level so that stuff like incinerated sausages will be a thing of the past.

Thanks to a variable infra-red heat control system, this neat stainless steel grill is capable of cooking food to perfection without cremating it. It can even toast bread and simmer soup (assuming the soup is in a saucepan, of course). Amazing! Fueled by mini A4 Butane Battery gas cartridges (available from all good camping/outdoor stores, and quite a few mediocre ones) the Barbegrill is ideal for campers, festival fans and barbecue buffs. You can even use it indoors, as long as you’re in a well-ventilated space. Built to last and easy to clean, this brilliant cooking companion is also incredibly safe as it features a pressure-activated gas cut-off device.

The Barbegrill is truly one innovative device that brings together the best of both worlds of barbecuing as well as grilling. Firebox is carrying it for £29.95, making it an ideal purchase before the summer arrives.
