HP Mini-Note 8.9″ Aluminum Laptop

Finally, the US gets it! Geeks are moving from the high end performance (and heavy) laptops to the ultra-portables in droves. While this market has been hot in other countries throughout Europe as well as the Asian markets including Japan, it took the Asus Eee PC to ignite the passion for ultra-portables here.

While the Asus Eee PC is definitely a rocking ultra-portable, the resolution of the monitor and the small solid state hard drive were an inhibitor for me and others. HP has answered with a tiny laptop called the HP Mini-Note Laptop which comes with a high-res 8.9″ 1280 x 768 display, a 120GB hard drive and a 92% of full-sized keyboard in cased in an all-aluminum case.

This particular setup includes the SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 version of the Mini-Note. If you’re into Windows you have to go to Vista though because HP hasn’t released XP drivers.

The dimensions of this ultra-portable is 1.05″ thick x 10.04″ x 6.5″ and weighs in at only 2.6 pounds.

Gimmie!

Suggested Price: $549.99

AT&T begins providing Starbucks Wi-Fi for select customers

Remember back in February, when we told you that AT&T and Starbucks struck a deal for free Wi-Fi in Starbucks stores, effectively leaving T-Mobile out to dry? Today, we have learned, that the telecom and coffee giant are determined to put that deal into effect.

Starting May 1, qualifying AT&T customers will be able to get free Wi-Fi in 7,000 Starbucks shops around the United States. What does “qualifying” mean, you ask? It means the free Wi-Fi is available for anybody who is paying for any one of AT&T’s three broadband internet packages, any of the small business packages AT&T offers, or any U-verse package.

That sounds excellent, as long as you use AT&T internet, but others will still have to wait a while longer. The remaining customers will be able to get access sometime during the year, as AT&T and Starbucks still plan to continue the rollout for other customers on a market-to-market basis. Once your local store has been converted, you will be given a mix or free and paid options to connect.

Tanita BC558

It has been a while since we have reported on Tanita’s products. Tanita probably makes the best weighing scales in the world, but one of their products, the BC558 is more of a “Segmental Body Composition Monitor” than a scale.

So what exactly is a Segmental Body Composition Monitor? It is a way of taking individual measurements for each body segment, including the trunk, right arm, left arm, right leg, and left leg.

So what exactly is the Tanita BC558 measuring? Everything. This includes your body fat percentage, body water percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, visceral fat, metabolic age, as well as weight. All of this information can be used to set up an exercise plan for yourself, and the Tanita BC558 can graph your weight loss progress on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

The set up of the Tantia BC558 is somewhat difficult, and involves setting up the date, time, and other personal weight settings. This setup process use retractable handgrip electrodes that allow for more accurate readings of the measurements that I mentioned above.

So if you are looking for a more disciplined and technical way of losing weight, the Tanita BC558 is the way to go. It can be purchased at the Competitive Edge website for about $299.99.

Walkie Talkie Watches keep your hands free

Walkie talkies are useful for keeping in touch with people in the great outdoors. Sure, your cell phone is almost as easy to use (or just as easy if you have push-to-talk), but unfortunately if you’re in the great wild, you aren’t going to have much luck getting a signal. If you’re one that doesn’t want to mess with carrying a walkie talkie around in your hand or on your belt all the time, why not get a pair of that sit on your wrist.

Sure, these Walkie Talkie Watches might be a little big to wear around as ordinary watches all the time, but look less obtrusive than your average device. These will work up to 1.5 miles away, and feature VOX so you don’t have to use both hands to operate it, and even comes with an earpiece for more discrete communication. You can pick up a pair for around $65.

Bloomframe folding balcony

I’m not entirely sure how a folding balcony is superior to one that doesn’t fold, considering you’re not really saving interior space, and presumably there’s sufficient space on the outside to expand out the balcony. Still, the award-winning Bloomframe by Hofman Dujardin Architects is rather cool. Apparently, the idea came about in response to the new-found popularity of balconies in Sweden. Bloomframe balconies can be added to existing buildings or made part of the design of new buildings, and are basically innovative window frames that can be pushed out to form an exterior balconies, expanding your interior space to the outdoors.

Find One Find All Key Finder

Mother’s Day can get a little bit less stressful with the Find One Find All Key Finder (FOFA), where mom can hook up these small 2-way wireless devices to her keys, purse, hubby’s keys, cell phones, TV remotes and virtually any other device she wants to keep track of. Just push a single button and the mislaid item can be found, doing away with the need to raise a ruckus in front of the kids on who was the last person to make use of the remote. The FOFA-XD comes in two formats, where one is a key fob about the size of a small car remote while the other is a flat credit card size wallet version. A two-pack of FOFA-XD Key finder costs $24.95, and ships with batteries and the necessary instructions.

Wacom reveals svelte RRFC capacitive touchscreen technology

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 25th 2008 at 7:03AM
Hold on to your touch panels, folks, as Wacom has just made known its plans to reveal “a major innovation in capacitive touchscreen technology” at next month’s International Society for Information Display Exhibition. The tech, dubbed Reversing Ramped Field Capacitive (RRFC) touch, relies on “reversing ramped electro-static fields” to bring unprecedented precision and “drift-free performance” to touchscreen users. Reportedly, it can be integrated into dual-input applications with the firm’s EMR pen-input solution or can operate on its lonesome on devices that require just a finger touch interface. Of course, there’s way more pizazz to the whole thing than we can cover in this space, but feel free to don your nerd suit and hit the read link if you’re thirsty for more.

Mexican attaché attempts to make off with White House BlackBerrys

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 25th 2008 at 8:01AM
We’re a bit frightened by the fact that high-ranking political officials are told to leave their BlackBerrys outside in an unguarded basket during high-level meetings (really, it’s “common practice”), but nevertheless, one chap who tried to take advantage of the situation didn’t quite make it out undiscovered. During a recent political meetup in New Orleans, a Mexican press attaché managed to slip a half dozen or so BlackBerrys into his pocket before darting to the airport with visions of black market markups in his head. Before he could exit the country, however, Secret Service had tracked him down after catching him via surveillance footage. As it stands, the responsible individual has been fired from his post, but there’s been no word on whether the US will take any further actions. Reevaluating the whole “leaving them out in the open” practice may be a good start — just sayin’.
